Tucked in a woodland of hemlock and cedar, and perched on a ledge overlooking Lake Champlain is a summer cabin in need of a new entry. The deep shade required a rich array of shade plants that would provide texture, color and a variety of foliage. Now in its first season of growth, the plantings carpet the gentle slope to the front door.

A new owner-designed home provided a blank slate for a landscape design. The goal was to avoid adding more lawn at the front entry and instead to create a lovely garden that could be seen from a large screened porch.

As is true in many towns and cities, cemeteries must find creative solutions to the problem of limited space. The trustees of Wilson Cemetery in Barre Town, VT developed a plan to build columbariums and asked that a simple and elegant landscape design be created to compliment the new site.

Overlooking a conserved farm and the hills beyond is a newly created terrace, rimmed with perennials and a stone retaining wall. It is warmed by late afternoon sun and allows the owners to enjoy a magnificent view of a working landscape.

Lakeside Cottage

The owners of this Vermont lakeside cottage were faced with several challenges. An asphalt driveway came steeply down to the cottage and wrapped around the entire house to the edge of the lake and lawn. The house was redesigned and the owners wanted to create a landscape design of native Vermont plantings that would fit into the surrounding woodlands and neighboring cottages with minimal maintenance.
